Burley in Wharfedale Annual Horse Racing
Horse racing, over the flat & grand hurdles, took place on a track located somewhere between Bradford Road & Eastfield Lane, Burley in Wharfedale (to the east of the village centre).
The racing occurred between the years 1864 to 1874, usually in October to tie in with the Burley Feast, but occasionally in September. 4 or more races were held for each 1 day meeting, with thousands of spectators coming from as far as Ripon, York, Leeds & surrounding districts. The races included: The Innkeepers' Plate (1 mile), The Wharfedale Handicap (1.5 miles), The Stewards' Cup (1.25 miles), The Farmers' Stake (0.75 mile) & The Consolation Stakes (2 miles). |
Burley in Wharfedale Annual Athletic Sports
1868 to 1880 Organised by the Burley in Wharfedale Athletic Club.
The first two & possibly three annual athletic sports events - 1868, 1869 & 1870 took place at Easter weekend over 2 days - the Saturday followed by the Monday, in the field behind & to the side of St. Mary's Parish Church. The field was "adapted" to take the athletic events. There's a strong possibility that this field was also used for other sports such as rugby union or an early form of association football.

In 1871 the event moved to what later became c1900 the Burley Clarence Cricket Ground in Walton Park - corner of Ilkley Road & Leather Bank. (Generous Pioneer site).
In 1875 it was rescheduled to May for better weather & held on two consecutive days, a Tuesday & Wednesday. The event was renamed the Burley in Wharfedale Athletic Festival.
A photocopied article in a Parish Magazine dated 1876 in Burley Archive, details the results from that year's festival. The info isn't legible after scanning, so have re-written them below.

1908 Burley Feast - Burley in Wharfedale
BURLEY FEAST was ushered in on Sunday with the kind of weather which the inhabitants have become accustomed to associate with this annual holiday. The usual collections of switchbacks and amusements was again in evidence in the Red Lion yard, and considering the slackness of trade during the past year, came in for a fair share of patronage.

1953 Coronation Celebrations - Elizabeth II (Accession to the throne 6th February 1952)
Memories of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s coronation in 1953 were brought back for Sylvia Howard with the discovery of these photographs.
Mrs Howard was having a sort out when she unearthed the pictures showing her own pivotal role in Burley in Wharfedale’s celebrations.
Then aged 15, and known as Sylvia Ripley, she was Rose Queen in a local event to mark the momentous national occasion.
“I don’t think it was on the same day as the coronation because I remember watching it on TV – but it was the same week or round about,” she said. “We had a competition at the primary school in Burley and I won it. I remember my mother was very proud.”
“A friend of mine (Geoff Horton) made my crown and decorated it in red velvet and fancy stones. I felt lovely.”
Mrs Howard was about five when she came to live in Burley with her sister and her mother, who was a war widow. “My auntie was the district nurse and so my mother came to housekeep for her,” she said.
